ON THE OIL STEPPE
In the small oil town of Atyrau, Kazakhstan day to day life is a challenge for most. In the old areas settled by exiles during the USSR era there are no shops nearby and no running water. The old houses and buildings are gradually being replaced by new apartment blocks which can be too expensive for the families living in these areas. The oil money is rolling in and these areas are being flattened to make way for the new, prosperous, independent Kazakhstan.
